The Upstate New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is proud to announce Frankie Gissendanner as their Robert Feldmeier Outstanding Wrestler Award winner for the 2017-18 wrestling season. Frankie was a four time New York State wrestling champion at Penfield High School in Section V under Coach John Leone. Gissendanner is presently enrolled at Rider College and hopes to be a NCAA champion like his former Section V wrestling friend Yanni Diakomihalis. Frankie will received the award at the September 23, 2018 induction ceremony at the Double Tree Hotel in East Syracuse.

The Upstate New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is proud to present Mike Wilcox with the Volunteer Award for 2018. Mike has been very active in the Greene Central School’s wrestling program since 1980 when Coach Bob Carlin invited him to join his staff. Wilcox has served as the Greene Wrestling Booster Club’s president and has been active in the Section IV Wrestling Officials Association. Along with his stellar volunteer work in wrestling, Mike has been involved in many volunteer ventures with the Greene and Bainbridge Rotary Clubs. In 2002, Mike was honored by the Norwich Evening Sun Press as the Volunteer of the Year. The Chapter is honored to award Mike  Wilcox with the Volunteer Award at the September 23, 2018 Hall of Fame ceremony at the Double Tree Hotel in East Syracuse.

The Upstate New York Chapter would like to welcome Mike Conners to their Hall of Fame. The former Baldwinsville High School New York state wrestling champion and Division III - NCAA wrestling champion at St. Lawrence University will be inducted into the National Hall of Fame on the September 23, 2018 ceremony. Coach Conners' Fulton Raiders won six state wrestling championships and fifteen Section III wrestling titles. Additionally, he was the 2008 New York State Coach of the Year. Furthermore Mike's, the 2000 Section III Football Coach of the Year,  football teams won three league titles. Presently, Coach Conners is the assistant wrestling coach at Oswego State and is an accomplished area golfer.

Mike Hogan wrestled for Hall of Fame Coach Stan Riggs at Peru High School and returned as the Indians coach in 1998. While at Peru, Coach Hogan has coached nine New York State Champions and two of those wrestlers, Arik Robinson and Jordan Bushey, were named the Outstanding Wrestler for their division. Additionally, Mike's teams have won many Section VII team titles and while at Saranac High School his team was ranked number one in the small school poll for 1994 and 1995. Coach Hogan's two sons, Patrick and Colin, have won Section VII championships and Patrick went on to Harvard to be a four year starter. Colin is presently wrestling at American University. Hogan's wife Julie, an accomplished singer, will be performing the National Anthem at this year's ceremony.

Dr. Mark Faller qualified for the NCAA championships three years while wrestling at Harvard University and graduated from Harvard cum laude with a dual major in physics and philosophy. Following Harvard, Mark returned to his alma mater, Port Jervis High School, and guided his teams to two New York State Championships and a second in 1980. He coached all the Banach brothers, Steve, Lou and Ed, with Lou and Ed winning olympic gold and 5 NCAA championships. Dr. Faller moved on to Franklin & Marshall and sported a 122-104-1 record against EIWA foes without the benefits of any athletic scholarships. Dr. Faller finished his career as a Professor of Philosophy at Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage and presently lives in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Frank Popolizio was coached by Section II legend Joe Bena at Niskayuna High School and would later develop into one of the best coaches and promoter of the sport of wrestling. Frank started the Journeymen Wrestling Club in 1999 and was instrumental in bringing Division I wrestling to the Capital region. This year he was selected one of the coaches for the USA Cadet team and directed the first dual meet that was contested out of the United States, The Tussle of the Troops. In that match Oklahoma State wrestled Frank's brother's team, the Wolfpack of North Carolina State. Additionally, he is the assistant coach at Shenendehowa High School where in the 2008-09 season he was awarded the NY State Assistant Coach of the Year honor. He will be honored on September 23, 2018 at the Upstate New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's awards ceremony. Tickets can be purchased by calling (607) 244-8432.

Betsy Veysman
Betsy Veysman, a Cornell University graduate, has been honored with the Stanbro Media Award for the Upstate New York's Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. While a student at Cornell Betsy join "The Cornell Daily" as a sports writer and unbeknownst to her commenced a distinguished career as a wrestling sports journalist. Betsy was not very knowledgeable about the sport of wrestling but Big Red coach Rob Koll assisted and guided her to become one of the best wrestling sport writers in the field. Betsy started the New York Wrestling News website and has written many wrestling pieces that often highlight the personal aspect of the wrestler rather than all the accomplishments that they have compiled.

Gene Tracy has been very active in the Syracuse Wrestling Officials Association since 1981 and has served as the president for five years. In addition, he is an active member of the Friends of Section III Wrestling and plays a vital role in running their annual golf outing. Gene has also served as the President of the New York State Wrestling Officials Association and in 2001 he was rated the number 1 official in the New York State Public High School Wrestling Championships. He will be inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Upstate New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame on September 23, 2018 at the Double Tree Hotel in East Syracuse. Pat Greene is former 2 time Section III champion at Cicero High who later went on to wrestle at Syracuse University under Hall of Fame coach Ed Carlin. At Syracuse Pat placed 3rd at the EIWA championships and qualified for the NCAA championships. Pat practices law and lives in Saratoga Springs. He will be honored on September 23 by the Upstate New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame with their Outstanding American Award.

Hello Section II Coaches,
On January 19th, Merrimack High School (Merrimack, NH) is hosting a mutli-state Dual Meet Tournament with top teams confirmed from Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts and of course, New Hampshire.  
We would love to increase the level of competition by adding 1 or 2 teams from New York as well.  
If you attend, you are guaranteed 4 duals and a possible 5th dual depending on how well your team performs.  We also HIGHLY encourage you to bring your JV wrestlers as we will have a separate JV mat running all day long - with most JV wrestlers getting between 5 and 8 matches. 
As of now, we have 12 confirmed teams from throughout New England.  In fact, we are also hosting a middle school dual tourney the following day if you'd like to bring those guys along as well!

Jarvis Memorial Tournament  Athens (D-4 AA) has openings in our varsity individual pooled event on December 8th.  With the pools each wrestler is scheduled to get five bouts.  Last year's event had 50 regional medalists, 27 kids wrestled at states, 14 state medalists, and 2 state champions.  We bring in teams from three different states so you will get to see kids you normally never do.  If interested e-mail Jay white at
