Hunter Meys

Class of 2020
Shenendehowa Plainsmen
Hunter Meys comes from a long family line of wrestlers. Including himself and his brother Austin there is also his father John and his Grandfather that were all high school state champs. Hunter was named by his father as short for headhunter which was a foretelling name as he would set the standard as the most predominant pinner in the nations history.

Hunter started wrestling when he was in 3rd grade as a present to his father and he liked it. He made the Shenendehowa varsity team as a seventh grader under coach Rob Weeks.

As a 7th grader in 2003 Hunter made the finals of the 96-pound single division Section 2 Championship losing in overtime 7-5. Then as an 8th grader in 2004 Meys won the Section 2 D1 championship at 112 pounds and went on to finish third in the State Tournament.

Meys would win the Section 2 championship again as a freshman at 130 pounds and would finish 5th in the state. Then as a sophomore Meys would lose his last high school match ever in the finals of the Section 2 tournament to eventual state champ Michael Chaires in overtime 3-1.

Hunter Meys would go undefeated his last two seasons at 171 and 189 pounds respectively and won his last 93 matches in a row. His career record of 259-9 would be the tops in section history at that time. He would win two more Section 2 titles and won the State Championship both years.

In his senior year Meys would break the national pin record held by Blair Academys Steve Mocco and he would end his career with a country best 216 pins. At one point during the season Hunter had 46 pins in a row.

Hunter was awarded the David DeMeo award as top area wrestler in both 2007 and 2008 for Section 2. He was named outstanding wrestler at Shenendehowa High and also NWCA New York Wrestler of the Year. Meys received the Junior Schalles Award, recognizing the nations best pinner. Hunter and his brother Austin were the first brothers to win State Wrestling titles in the same year.

In 2008 Hunter Meys was named the inaugural recipient of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award, which was presented by the Upstate New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame at its annual banquet.

Meys would go on to wrestled for Boston University where he majored in Education. As a freshman in 2009 he was 29-13 and named team MVP as he was one of only 4 true freshmen to qualify for the NCAA tourney. Hunter would go on to be a two-time NCAA qualifier for the Terriers.
